Maldonado City: A Logo Design Reflecting the Spirit of a Coastal Town

Agustin Larrosa's Award-Winning Design Fuses Nature and Culture in a Unique Corporate Identity

Agustin Larrosa's design for the Maldonado City logo is a testament to the power of thoughtful design. Drawing inspiration from the city's natural beauty and cultural heritage, Larrosa has created a logo that is not only visually striking but also deeply meaningful to the city's inhabitants. This design was awarded Silver in A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2019.

The Maldonado City logo is a unique blend of form and function. The design is inspired by the city's close connection to the sea, specifically the path drawn by the blast of water thrown by the whales, a common sight in the city's coastal waters. The logo's thick and rounded lines create a friendly and corporeal image, reflecting the city's spirit of strength, exchange, and union.

Larrosa's design process was meticulous and research-driven. He studied the city's past logos and realized that they didn't fully capture the essence of Maldonado. His goal was to create a logo that would resonate with the city's inhabitants and represent their town accurately. The result is a logo that is both modern and deeply rooted in the city's history.

The logo was created using the sea waves, the whale’s struggles, and the citizens' union and connection with the town as principal factors. The waves shown in the M letter are replicated on the visual opening of the brand, which is then part of patterns, posters, and banners. The logo can be used in the color blue, but in order to not compromise its legibility on other backgrounds, white is preferred.

The design was realized over a period of four months, from August to December 2017, in Montevideo, Uruguay. It was initially created for an academic project, but there is now a big chance this work could be used for institutional purposes. The technical specifications of the design include dimensions for cards, letterheads, web design, and posters.

In conclusion, Agustin Larrosa's design for the Maldonado City logo is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can create a powerful symbol for a community. By drawing on the city's natural and cultural heritage, Larrosa has created a logo that is not only visually appealing but also deeply meaningful to the city's inhabitants. This design is a testament to the power of design to reflect and enhance a community's identity.
